Dr. Stephen Bray
Having provided impartial advice for many years in dental practice, I have been rewarded by having built a wide and strong base of appreciative patients and clients based on honesty and respect for others.
I earned my BDS with a distinction in medicine at the London Hospital (UK) in 1978 and subsequently pursued various residency positions there.
My wife and I moved to Toronto and achieved my DDS also receiving the American Endodontics Award while there.
After running a successful general dental practice in Northern Ontario, our family (now with two children) moved across country to Kelowna, B.C. in 1984 to operate my own practice there, which I did for 16 years. Receiving a letter of appreciation and service award from the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. I turned my practice over to my partners in 2000 and returned to the UK with my family, to pursue postgraduate education.
I practiced in Harley Street (W. London) and ran a South Coast practice (Poole, Dorset) in full mouth reconstruction with an emphasis on jaw joint dysfunction and facial pain management.
After spending time back at the Royal London and Bart’s Hospital I passed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Membership Exam (Glasgow) and the Royal College of Surgeons Membership Exam (Edinburgh) exams – even learning the Scot’s language while in Glasgow!
Back in London I undertook advanced training in dental implantology from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and also achieved certification in Prosthodontics at Kings College University in London.
It was at this time, I first provided Dental Expert Witness Opinion – at Cambridge County Court (UK) and decided that a better appreciation of the facts as they pertained to dentistry and dental and oral injuries was necessary.
In the US a Fellowship in Cranio-mandibular Orthopedics from the preceded a move to Boston Massachusetts for full time study in Orofacial Pain and Sleep Apnea Management at Tufts University. Following full time postgraduate studies there I achieved my Fellowship in Orofacial pain and sleep disorders too.
In Boston and Texas I completed my two American Boards examinations (West and East Coast) and was asked to remain at Tufts University to teach. I divided my time between teaching at the Dental School and undergoing further study at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
After 3 years there, I returned to the UK for a 2-year University of Glasgow Behavioural Sleep Medicine Diploma, remaining associated with the Royal Brompton and Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospitals in London and providing Expert Opinion in the field of Dental Sleep medicine, Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
With my wife , we returned to Kelowna, where, working primarily with physicians, I provided a service limited to the management of Sleep Disorders, especially Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Temporo mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) and Chronic Facial Pain management.
Recently after two years of intensive study I was awarded the coveted Diplomate of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). I also hold the Diplomate of the American Board of Cranio-facial Dental Sleep Medicine by examination (ABCDSM). Holding both, I am the only dentist to hold either qualification by examination, in the interior of British Columbia.
Trained in Forensic work in several countries, I offer expertise as a professional Dental Expert Witness for both defense and plaintiff lawyers in British Columbia. I return to England when I can to pursue further education at the Expert Witness Institute in London there being little or no training available here in Canada.
As a Dental Expert Witness, I can assists the legal team and court with their understanding of the facts of the case at hand. While this usually takes the form of a detailed report, I has taken advanced courtroom training under Mr. Paul Garlic Q.C. (Queen’s Council) and has Expert Witness courtroom experience.
I am a full member of both the Expert Witness Institute, which while based in the UK at Temple Chambers, has branches across the world. I am also a member of the American College of Legal Medicine and have lectured for them on dental matters.
Alas, I have had personal experience with dishonest employees and manipulative and dishonest business and dental partners – all part of the rich mosaic of life, I suppose. As a Manager in a large National Bank once said to me, “people don’t realize this, but if someone wants to “take” a bank badly enough – even though we have safeguards, they can and they will”.
In addition to my Expert Witness Practice, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Jaw Joint expertise I’ve volunteered my General Dental Skills to low-income families in the Kelowna area, was designated a UBC instructor and has acted for the B.C. Dental Association and its political interface.
My interests include creative writing, online teaching, railways (both model and real), history and spending time with my family, my wife, two kids and three grandchildren.
Why did I do this?
I find it frustrating when ignorance reigns. Looking back on my life this far, I’m human and have made mistakes, yet I’ve always made an honest effort to correct the issue at hand and upgrade my comprehension or knowledge base. I believe that as ‘professionals’, we should own a desire for betterment in our own lives to, and for whom we serve.
